Snack Time!

In Snack Time! Nishikawa’s ceramic sculptures emerge from memories that hover just beyond reach. Raised in Honolulu, she grew up in a family where love was expressed through food; sashimi carefully sliced, stuffed cabbage simmering, Rice Krispies treats waiting for her return home. These gestures of care linger in her work, where recollections of shared snacks, birthday tempura, and small exchanges across distance become points of departure.

Formed through coils, slabs, and improvisational gestures, her vessels move fluidly between use and metaphor. Many operate as quirky character studies in the eating habits of those she holds dear: hyper-attuned, intricately functional objects imagined for singular users. In their subtle distortions and playful specificity, they reflect the minor gestures that make each of us distinct, and the quiet interpersonal rituals through which intimacy and belonging are built.
